Mini studio for travel and rainy days

Planning to take a plane soon as a carry-on, a typical en Plein-air painting kit may not make it past security due to the tubes of paint and tripod. Taking a page out of Sarah Burns Studio, a super quick plain air setup seemed ideal for plane travel. With the help of elastics and magnets and tin, water pens and buying some water colour this kit can fit in any backpack.

The travel kit:

"Art Spiral- Maruman" watercolour sketchbook at "Nanao Kimono Japanese Lifestyle Store" and could not resist the high-quality paper. Also in walking distance across the street, the store owner of Sunnyside Arts Supplies has watercolours produced in Russia called Nevskaya Palitra and a small White Nites metal tray where you can pick the colours. (How fun, it was like picking out candy). Quickly deciding on going with a landscape primary warm-cool palette known as the prismatic palette (Frank Vincent Dumond)

Tip:

Did you know water pens open in the reverse? (Learned the hard way and had to go back to the art store, thank you Sunnyside!)

The purpose of today's study

The balcony was a great place to begin on a rainy morning to gather inspiration. The intention? Use less white and avoid a chalky painting. However, capturing the ultraviolet pink flowers was too much of a challenge. Stopping for a while, and returning to the overworked colour. Later that day and the focus changed to high contrast and great lines. Recalling a photo taken of beautiful flowers from Riley Park from a daily dog walk. Sometimes, it's okay to remind ourselves it's okay to shift what is this painting about and chan.

Would love to hear your tips on plane travel!

Happy painting!
